From: Johnson, Erica Date: 07/18/05 11:31:02 To: 'NAVYBEAR' Subject: RE: CLOSING THOUGHTS ON THE HASTINGS FAMILY
Dear Mr Hastings, Thank-you for your recent e-mail and the wonderful family tree that you attached, you have done so well to get such a long lineage back to the 15th Century.
Why did the family change their name form Hairstones to Hastings?, Well I notice that this change seems to take place around the late 1700's, when written records are becoming far more common. It is likely that the name was changed by the local Parish Session Clerk, possibly a new man taking over the job around that time decided that the name given to him by the family when the children were baptized sounded like Hastings, in the heavy local accent, and once changed it simply became the accepted spelling. At that time very few people could read or write and the family may not have realized that the Clerk had spelt the name differently from previous entries in the record.

Any e mail message sent or received by the Council may require to be disclosed by the Council under the provisions of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. ============================================================================ Note: Erica Johnson, Genealogist at the Dumfries/Galloway Library: July, 2005 I found 3 family baptisms in the Durisdeer Old Parish Registers: “1829 – February 22nd – John, Lawful son of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Cottonhouse.” “1833 – March 3rd – Helen, Lawful daughter of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Anoch.” “1835 – March 21st – Robert, Lawful son of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Enoch.”
No other baptisms were found for this family, but despite giving Durisdeer as their birthplaces in the 1851 Census, it might be worth checking with the Lanark Old Parish Registers, in case they were originally from Crawford, Lanarkshire, which is just over the border from Dumfriesshire.
================================================================================= DUMFRIES Scotland Library, Ms Erica Johnson conducted family genealogy research on June 24, 2005. I searched for the marriage certificate of Robert Hastings and Ann/Annie. Unfortunately I could not find a Marriage Certificate. I then searched for and obtained the Birth Certificate of Thomas Hastings, born in 1866 [enclosed]:
EXTRACT FROM BIRTH CERTIFICATE: Name of Child: Thomas Hastings. Date of Birth: 1866 – February Sixth, 5hours AM. Place of Birth: 44 Inverkip Street, Greenock. Name of Father: Robert Hastings, Plumber. Name of Mother: Ann Hastings, [maiden surname: Duff] Details of Parents Marriage: 1860 September 28th in Paisley. Informant: Robert Hastings, Father, present. Registered: 1866, February 24th at Greenock by H Macmillian, Assistant Registrar.
I searched again for the parent’parents marriage certificate but still none was found. I searched for the Birth Certificate of Mary A Hastings born in 1861 [enclosed]:
EXTRACT FROM BIRTH CERTIFICATE: Name of Child: Mary Austin Hastings. Date of Birth: 1861, April Second, 8 hours 30 minutes AM. Place of Birth: 15 Nith Place, Dumfries. Name of Father: Robert Hastings, Plumber [Journeyman]. Name of Mother: Annie Hastings [maiden surname: Duff] Details of Parents Marriage: 1860 October 28th Dumfries. Informant: Robert Hastings, father. Registered: 1861, April 22nd at Dumfries by Robert Martin, Registrar.
A different marriage date and place was given on this certificate, so I think it can be assumed that the parents were not married. I searched the 1851 Census for any trace of them, hoping that they were living with their parents at the time.
THE DUFF FAMILY I found Ann Duff in Dumfries: Parish of Dumfries, enumeration District No 9, Household No 154, Place: Townhead. James Duff, head of household, married, aged 45, A Mail Coachman, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Mary Duff, wife, married, aged 45, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. John Duff, son, unmarried, aged 20, A Labourer, Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire. James Duff, son, unmarried, aged 17, A Draper, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Ann Duff, daughter, aged 14, A Scholar, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Samuel Duff, son, aged 11, A Scholar, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. George Duff, son, aged 9, A Scholar, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Marion Duff, daughter, aged 6, A Scholar, born Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. James Houston, brother in law, married, aged 37, A General Labourer, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire.
I also found the family in the 1841 Census, Castle Douglas, Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Enumeration District No 1, Page 1, Place: St Andrew’s Street. James Duff, aged 30, Male Servant, born Scotland, this county. Mary Duff, aged 30, Female Servant, born Scotland, not this county. Mary Duff, aged 14, born Scotland, not this county. Janet Duff, aged 12, A Bonnet Maker Apprentice, born Scotland, this county. John Duff, aged 10, born Scotland, this county. James Duff, aged 7, born Scotland, this county. Anne Duff, aged 4, born Scotland, this county. Samuel Duff, aged 2, born Scotland, this county.
Please note that the ages in the 1841 Census are rounded down to the nearest five years for over fifteens.
I searched for Duff family baptism in the Old Parish Registers. I could only find the ones below:
Girthon Old Parish Register: “Janet Duff, daughter of James Duff, Chaise Driver, and Mary Austin in Gatehouse, was baptized 2nd November 1828.” “John Duff, son of James Duff, Chaise Driver, and Mary Austin in Gatehouse, was baptized 25th July 1830.” “Isabella Duff, daughter of James Duff, Chaise Driver, and Mary Austin in Gatehouse, was baptized 22nd April 1832.” Kelton Old Parish Register: “Samuel Cowan Duff, son of James Duff, Driver, and Mary Austin in Castle Douglas, was baptized 21st July 1839.” “George Gordon Duff, son of James Duff, Driver, and Mary Austin in Castle Douglas, was baptized 5th September 1841.”
No other children’s baptisms were found, so in all James Duff and Mary Austin had the following children: Mary born circa 1827, Janet born in November 1828, John born in July 1830, Isabella born in April 1832, James born circa 1834, Anne born circa 1837, Samuel Cowan born in 1839, George Gordon born in 1841 and Marion born circa 1845.
James Duff was a Mail Coachman or Chaise Driver, and as the Mail Coaches would have also carried passengers in those days they are different descriptions of the same trade.
I did find one other item relating to the children of James Duff and Mary Austin. In the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Advertiser Newspaper of the 12th November 1856, Page 4, Column G, there is the announcement of the marriage of Isabella Duff, third daughter of James Duff, Coach-Driver, Royal Mail, Stranraer. She married James Johnston, a Slater, on the 29th October 1856, at Mount Pleasant, Dumfries, by the Rev J M Austin of St Mary’s. A Photocopy is enclosed. This indicates that James Duff was the Royal Mail Coach Driver for the Stranraer Mail Coach. [I checked out Rev John Mein Austin in case he was a relation of Mary Austin, James Duff’s wife, but it does not appear so as he was born in Edinburgh in 1819.]
Mary Austin was baptized in Morton by Thornhill Parish:
Morton By Thornhill Old Parish Registers: “Mary Austin, daughter of James Austin and Janet Kerr, was baptized 31st March 1805.”
She had siblings baptized in Closeburn Parish, which is nearby.
Closeburn Old Parish Registers – Baptisms: “3rd January 1808 - James Austine and Janet Carr, in Barnmuir, a daughter.” “10th January 1810 - James Austine and Janet Carr, in Markeure, a son - John.” “27th June 1811 - James Austine and Janet Carr, in Margeryhill, a daughter - Janet.” “5th October 1817 - James Austan and Jannet Keir, in Margeryhill, a son - Thomas.”
No marriage was found for James Austin and Janet Kerr/Carr/Keir, their baptisms were not found either. I checked the Closeburn Monument Inscriptions but no family gravestones were found.
James Duff, the Mail Coachman, was baptized in Kelton Parish:
Kelton Old Parish Register: “James Duff, son of James Duff and Mary Wilson, in Castle Douglas, was baptized 12th January 1806.” He also had a brother: “John Duff, son of James Duff and Mary Wilson, in Castle Douglas, was baptized 27th June 1807.”
I also found the family buried in Castle Douglas, [Kelton]. Plot No 123: [a Winged Soul] “Erected by John Wilson, In Memory of James Wilson, who died May 22nd 1798, aged 17 years. Also of Elizabeth Hop, spouse of the said John Wilson, who died February 2nd 1800, aged 56 years. Also of Mary Hannay, his 2nd spouse, who died the 15th of December 1825, aged 76 years.” On the Reverse: “Here Lies Mary Anderson, who died January 1800, aged 80 years. Also his Grandson, John Duff, who died 29th July 1827, aged 20 years. Also his daughter, Mary Wilson, widow of James Duff, who died at Castle Douglas, 30th September 1852, aged 79 years.”
Mary Wilson was the daughter of John Wilson and Elizabeth Hope [not Hop as on the Monument Inscription]. She was baptized in Crossmichael Parish:
Crossmichael Old Parish Registers: “Mary Wilson, daughter of John Wilson and Elizabeth Hope, in Culgruff, was baptized 21st October 1773.”
Mary had an older brother and sister baptized in Kelton Parish:
Kelton Old Parish Registers: “James Wilson, son of John Wilson and Elizabeth Hope, was baptized 4th June 1780.” “Anne Wilson, daughter John Wilson and Elizabeth Hope, in the town of Carlingwalk, was baptized 7th March 1783.” Carlingwalk was the old name for Castle Douglas.
I was unable to find any further information on the Wilson and Hope families.
James Duff, married to Mary Wilson, was baptized in Kirkcudbright. Kirkcudbright Old Parish Registers: “James Duff, son of James Duff and Janet Turner, spouses at Stockerton, was baptized 4th June 1763.”
He had other brothers and sisters also baptized in Kirkcudbright: “Janet Duff, lawful daughter of James Duff and Janet Turner, in Stockertown, was baptized 12th November 1761.” “John Duff, lawful son of James Duff and Janet Turner, in Stockerton, was baptized 18th March 1765.” “Marion Duff, daughter of James Duff and Janet Turner, in Little Stockerton, was baptized 13th February 1767, born 8th February 1767.” “Robert Duff, son of James Duff and Janet Turner, was baptized 23rd January 1769.” “Janet Duff, lawful daughter of James Duff and Janet Turner, at Stockerton, was baptized 8th September 1771.”
James Duff and Janet Turner were married on the 27th November 1760 in Kirkcudbright Parish. The entry from the Proclamation Register is as follows: “Kirkcudbright – 14th November 1760 – In Presence of Baillie Reid, James Duff at Black Stockerton and Janet Turner at Little Stockerton gave in their names for proclamation in order to marriage. Samuel Gordon in Stockerton Cautr [Cautioner] for the man and James Turner for his daughter. Married 27th November 1760.”
No other Old Parish Register entries could be found for this family. However I found that they were buried in Kirkcudbright Churchyard:
Plot No 758: “Here lies the body of Janet McClure, spouse to James Turner in Little Stockerton, who departed this life March 1760 aged 58 years. Also the corps of John, James and Agnes children procreate between them, also here lies the said James Turner, who died 2nd March 1779, aged 82. Their daughter Janet Turner, spouse to James Duff in Little Stockertoun, she died 22nd May 1782, aged 52 years.” East Side: [A Winged Soul] “ Also here lyes the body of Elizabeth Turner, spouse to John Turner in East Bomby, who died 22nd September 1812, aged 72 years. Also the said John Turner, who died 24th November 1816, aged 85 years.”
So Janet Turner was the daughter of James Turner and Janet McClure.
There were two other Gravestones in Kirkcudbright Graveyard connected to the Duff Family:
Plot 759: [Marion Duff, daughter of James Duff and Janet Turner] “ Sacred to the Memory of John Martin, Clock maker, Kirkcudbright, who departed this life October 1801, aged 91 years. Also Margaret McClure, his spouse, who died May 1781. Also their children John, Roger, and Isabella who died in infancy. And also their daughter Elizabeth, who departed this life August 3rd 1828, aged 81 years.” Reverse Side: “In Memory of John Bryce, who died at Clauchan of Tongland, 10th January 1816, aged 46 years. Marion, his daughter, died in infancy 1804. Marion Duff his relict, died at Hightae, Parish of Kelton, 2nd September 1844, aged 73 years. Also their son James, who died at Bengal, East Indies, 16th March 1849, aged 42 years.”
Plot 749: [Robert Duff, son James Duff and Janet Turner] “Erected in Memory of Robert Duff, late farmer in Little Sypland, who died 22nd March 1822, aged 51 years. Margaret Anderson, his spouse, who died at the same place, 13th April 1849, aged 77 years. Anna Duff, their daughter, who died 1st August 1844, aged 44 years. William Duff, their son, who died 16th June 1853, aged 46 years. Also Jessie Nairn, wife of Robert Duff, their son, who died at High Barcaple, 29th March 1873, aged 53 years. Also Jane Duff, spouse of the late James Hornell, Merchant, Kirkcudbright, who died at Little Sypland, 19th August 1875, aged 65 years. Also James Duff, who died at same place, 20th December 1876, aged 74 years. Also Margaret Duff, who died at same place, 8th January 1878, aged 73 years. Also Janet Duff, who died at High Barcaple, 12th May 1887, aged 92 years. Also the said Robert Duff, their son, who died at High Barcaple, 9th June 1896, aged 85 years.”
THE HASTINGS FAMILY
From the naming pattern of the children of Robert Hastings and Ann Duff, I would expect Robert Hastings parents to be a Thomas and a Margaret. I found the right family in the 1851 Census:
1851 Census, Parish of Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire, Enumeration District No 2, Household No 17, Place: Mosside.
Thomas Hastings, head of household, married, aged 56, A Labourer, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Margaret Hastings, wife, married, aged 54, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. James Hastings, son, unmarried, aged 28, A Labourer, born Crawford, Lanark. John Hastings, son, unmarried, aged 21, A Labourer, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Helen Hastings, daughter, unmarried, aged 17, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Robert Hastings, son, unmarried, aged 15, A Labourer, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Robina Hastings, daughter, aged 13, born Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire.
1841 Census, Parish of Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire, Enumeration District No 2, Page 3 & 4, Place: Mosside [number 3].
Thomas Hastings, aged 45, A Gardener, born Scotland, this county. Margaret Hastings, aged 40, born Scotland, this county. Janet Hastings, aged 15, born Scotland, this county. John Hastings, aged 12, born Scotland, this county. Ellen Hastings, aged 8, born Scotland, this county. Robert Hastings, aged 6, born Scotland, this county. Rabina Hastings, aged 4, born Scotland, this county.
James Hastings, the older son of the family was found in Durisdeer Parish, Enumeration District No 4, Page 2, Place: Kirkbride Outhouse.
James Hastings aged 15, An Agricultural Labourer, born Scotland, this county.
He was working for John McCall, aged 40, and his wife Agnes McCall, aged 30, who were farming at Kirkbride, with 5 female Agricultural Labourers living with them and their 1 year old daughter in the farmhouse and 2 male Agricultural Labourers, James Hastings and Robert Douglas [aged 10], living in the Outhouse of Kirkbride.
Please note that the ages in the 1841 Census are rounded down to the nearest five years for over fifteens.
The above Census returns show that Robert was the 5th child of the family, James Hastings born circa 1823, in Crawford, Lanark, Janet Hastings born circa 1826, John Hastings baptized 1829 in Durisdeer, Helen Hastings baptized in 1833 in Durisdeer, Robert Hastings baptized 1835 in Durisdeer and Robina Hastings born circa 1838 in Durisdeer.
I found 3 family baptisms in the Durisdeer Old Parish Registers:
“1829 – February 22nd – John, Lawful son of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Cottonhouse.” “1833 – March 3rd – Helen, Lawful daughter of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Anoch.” “1835 – March 21st – Robert, Lawful son of Thomas Hastings and Margaret Grierson, in Enoch.”
No other baptisms were found for this family, but despite giving Durisdeer as their birthplaces in the 1851 Census, it might be worth checking with the Lanark Old Parish Registers, in case they were originally from Crawford, Lanarkshire, which is just over the border from Dumfriesshire.
I did find a family Gravestone in Durisdeer Cemetery:
Plot 211: “In affectionate remembrance of Mary Douglas, wife of James Brown, who died at Mosside, Durisdeer, on the 13th July 1872, aged 71 years. Also the above James Brown who died at Thornhill, the 2nd March 1887, aged 89 years. In Loving Memory of Margaret Grierson, wife of Thomas Hastings, who died at Farthingbank, Durisdeer, June 4th 1857, aged 61 years. [born circa 1796] Also the above Thomas Hastings who died at Thornhill, October 12th 1877, aged 84 years. [born circa 1793]”

I searched again for the parent’s marriage certificate but still none was found.
